Walking by Faith in a Broken Marriage

By Dr. Dellia Evans

No mom wants to feel unsafe or have her children feel unsafe at home. We pray for God’s protection. When it’s your husband constantly hurting your heart, breaking your spirit, or causing chaos, it’s time to ask for help and begin walking by faith in a broken marriage.

Every October, I thank God for being a domestic violence survivor. I lived in a broken marriage for 20 years before making a faith-filled, life-changing decision.

I had just prayed for God to intervene when I found myself getting up from the floor after being slapped by my husband. Five minutes later, he jumped on our 13-year-old daughter as our 11-year-old son stood frozen in fear.

That was the dark morning, 15 years ago, when my children said they no longer wanted to be at home. We fled with nothing but duffle bags and faith. That’s where faith and healing after abuse truly began.

After finding true love and remarrying, it took me 10 years to share my story. I was amazed how many women related to my experience.

You may feel hurt, disappointed, and overwhelmed, thinking you are alone or failing as a Christian wife. Many Christian moms in broken marriages ask me:

How do I please God and protect my children?

If God hates divorce, how do I honor Him if I leave?

How do I submit to a husband not led by God?

How do I survive financially if my husband isn’t a good steward?

The truth is—you were not created to compete for love. You are God’s daughter, worthy of respect and peace. God does not want His children to live in fear or under ungodly leadership.

Isaiah 1:17 reminds us to “learn to do right; seek justice and relieve the oppressed.” A Christian perspective on divorce recognizes God’s heart for justice and safety, not suffering.

A Christian counselor can help with communication and boundaries, but when a husband repeatedly abuses or manipulates, it’s time to act. Abuse isn’t only physical—it can be emotional, verbal, financial, or spiritual.

When you feel anxious or depressed because of constant mistreatment, remember Christ came to heal the brokenhearted and set the captive free.

To become a survivor, pray for wisdom, seek help, and take action. If in danger, call 911 or the DV hotline at 800-799-7233.

God turned my duffle bags and faith into a mission to help others. Through my book and journal Heart Vision, I guide women toward healing and faith restoration.

According to Isaiah 32:18, God desires your home to be peaceful, safe, and restful. Claim that promise.
