The Miracle of Prayer: How Faith and God’s Hand Launched Mercy Ships

Guest Post by Mercy Ships

A Vision Born from Faith

The Mercy Ships story of faith exists today because of the vision God gave to its founder, Don Stephens Mercy Ships founder, and the many prayers of those who believed in it from the beginning.

In the late 1970s, Don felt called to bring free, life-changing medical care to people in some of the world’s poorest areas. But he knew he needed more than a dream; he knew only the power of prayer in missions could turn the vision God gave him into a reality.

From Vision to Reality by God’s Grace

When Don shared his idea with friends Henri and Françoise André, he didn’t realize that God had already placed people around him to help make it happen.

Henri offered his support and connections, opening doors Don never expected. Through a meeting with Italian officials, Don and his team got the chance to buy a ship that would become the first floating hospital—a dream that, until then, had seemed impossible.

The ship, named Victoria, became the first Mercy Ship through faith and hard work.

Over the next four years, it went through major renovations, and Mercy Ships faced huge challenges along the way—a global oil crisis, an earthquake, and many delays. But again and again, God answered the prayers of those who believed in this mission. Supporters, families, and friends lifted up every need, trusting that God would carry this work forward. And He did.

During one pivotal meeting, as Don shared the heart behind History of Mercy Ships with an Italian government official, the man was moved. “I am an old man,” he said, “and I am going to meet God myself one of these days. I, too, would like to do something to help the developing nations.”

In that moment, Don’s vision moved closer to becoming a reality, and the Victoria was soon on her way to becoming the world’s first floating hospital mission work and would be renamed Anastasis, which means “a standing up again, a resurrection.”

From there, God continued to provide—through supporters, bank approvals, and the helping hands of volunteers who paid their own way to serve with Mercy Ships.

A Mission Driven by Faith Today

Just as Mercy Ships began through faith; its work today still depends on prayer and support from people around the world. Each surgery, each life touched, is a testimony to God’s faithfulness and an enduring part of the Mercy Ships story of faith

One recent story shows how God continues to work through this mission.

In Madagascar, a mother prayed for a miracle for her daughter, who was born with a cleft lip. With no way to get the medical care she needed, the mother prayed, asking God to make a way. Her answer came in an amazing way: Mercy Ships arrived, and a volunteer surgeon performed the surgery her daughter needed, restoring her smile and her confidence.
