The holidays are a beautiful time to focus on gratitude, kindness, and generosity. As Christian moms, we know the importance of teaching kids generosity during the holidays—not just receiving—during this season. After all, God’s ultimate gift to us, His Son Jesus, was the greatest example of generosity we could ever imagine (John 3:16).
Here are some simple, meaningful ways to involve your kids in giving back during the holidays, all while keeping Christ at the center and embracing Christian family giving traditions.
Pack a Shoebox for Operation Christmas Child
Organizations like Samaritan’s Purse allow families to pack shoeboxes filled with gifts and necessities for children in need around the world. Let your kids help pick out items like small toys, hygiene products, and school supplies. Use this as an opportunity to talk about how these gifts reflect God’s love to others.
Take your kids shopping with a specific child’s age and gender in mind, and pray over the box as a family before dropping it off. These are excellent Operation Christmas Child shoebox ideas.
Bake (and Deliver!) Treats for Neighbors or Church Members
Baking together is a fun way to bond, and it becomes even more meaningful when the treats are for others. Choose a few people in your community—like an elderly neighbor or a single mom at church—and surprise them with homemade cookies or a loaf of festive bread.
Remind your kids of Acts 20:35: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” These simple acts reinforce holiday acts of kindness for kids.
Adopt a Family in Need
Many churches and charities organize Adopt-a-Family Christmas programs, where you can provide Christmas gifts or a holiday meal for a family going through a tough time. Encourage your kids to help pick out presents or write cards for the family.
Explain that giving doesn’t need to be flashy or expensive—what matters most is the love behind it.
Declutter and Donate Toys or Clothes
The holidays are a natural time to declutter and make space for new gifts your kids might receive. Teach your kids the value of generosity by encouraging them to donate toys or clothes they no longer use to a local shelter or thrift store.
Share 2 Corinthians 9:7: “God loves a cheerful giver,” and ask your children to reflect on how their donations could bless another child. This is a wonderful way to connect Bible verses about giving and generosity to action.
Serve Together as a Family
Volunteering as a family can be a powerful way to show your kids what generosity looks like in action. Whether it’s serving meals at a soup kitchen, helping with a church event, or visiting residents at a nursing home, these hands-on experiences leave a lasting impression.
After serving, discuss how it felt to help others and how it aligns with Jesus’ command to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31).
Start a “Kindness Countdown”
Instead of a traditional Advent calendar filled with chocolate, create a “Kindness Countdown” where each day involves a simple act of generosity. Ideas could include:
- Writing a thank-you note to a teacher
- Donating canned goods to a food pantry
- Making Christmas cards for missionaries
Let your kids take turns choosing the daily act of kindness, keeping them engaged in holiday acts of kindness for kids.
Keep the Focus on Christ
While these activities are wonderful, the true goal is to help our kids understand why we give: because God first gave to us. Read and discuss Bible verses about giving and generosity, and take time as a family to pray for those you are helping.
By weaving acts of generosity into your holiday traditions, you’ll not only bless others but also teach your kids the joy of living out their faith in a tangible way. This Christmas, let’s remind our children that the best gifts aren’t the ones under the tree—they’re the ones we give from our hearts.
