As the seasons shift—whether it’s the crisp air of fall, the bloom of spring, or the calm of winter—it’s a beautiful reminder that God is always at work, bringing newness and change into our lives. Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
Each season is a fresh opportunity to slow down, notice God’s goodness, and teach our families to live with thankful hearts. Here are five simple, family-friendly ways to celebrate the changing seasons with gratitude.
1. Create a “Thankful Tree” or “Gratitude Garland”
Gather your family for a creative craft that becomes a daily reminder of thankfulness.
For a Thankful Tree: Collect branches, place them in a vase, and hang paper leaves labeled with things your family is thankful for each day.
For a Gratitude Garland: Cut out colorful paper shapes—leaves, hearts, or stars—and write daily blessings on them, stringing them across your mantel or window.
It’s a hands-on way to help kids see how God’s blessings add up, one grateful thought at a time.
2. Go on a “God’s Creation Walk”
Each season reveals God’s creativity in new ways—fresh blossoms, golden leaves, gentle snow, or warm sunshine. Take a walk together and look for signs of His handiwork.
Encourage your children to point out what they see and thank God out loud for each one: “Thank You, Lord, for that bright red leaf!” or “Thank You for the way the air smells clean after the rain.”
End your walk with a short prayer, thanking God for the beauty around you and the changing rhythms of life.
3. Cook a Seasonal Meal Together
Gather in the kitchen and make a meal that celebrates the season—pumpkin muffins in fall, soup and bread in winter, berry cobbler in summer. As you cook, talk about how God provides food in every season and how His provision is something to be thankful for.
Even the smallest hands can stir, pour, or set the table. Before eating, let each family member share one thing they’re grateful for.
4. Start a Family Gratitude Journal
Keep a simple notebook in the kitchen or living room where everyone can jot down things they’re thankful for.
At the end of each week, read them aloud together and thank God for His faithfulness. Over time, you’ll see how many blessings have filled your days—big and small—and how gratitude changes the way you see life.
5. Serve Someone in Need
Gratitude overflows into generosity. As a family, find one way to bless someone else in each season—bake cookies for a neighbor, donate coats to a shelter, or send encouragement cards to missionaries or shut-ins.
Serving together helps children understand that gratitude isn’t just about saying “thank you”—it’s about sharing the love and abundance God has given us.
A Grateful Heart in Every Season
When we take time to notice God’s fingerprints in each season, gratitude grows naturally. These small traditions can become powerful rhythms that shape our children’s hearts—and our own—toward thankfulness and joy.
So as the leaves turn, the snow falls, or the flowers bloom, pause with your family to celebrate the One who never changes, no matter what the season brings.
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” — Psalm 107:1
