More Than Halloween: Teaching Your Kids the Power of Reformation Day

Why Reformation Day Still Matters for Christian Moms

Every October 31st, while most of the world is dressing up for Halloween, another celebration quietly takes place—Reformation Day. It’s not about candy or costumes, but about courage, conviction, and faith—and it has everything to do with how we live and raise our children today.

What Is Reformation Day?

Reformation Day marks the moment in 1517 when a German monk named Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of a church in Wittenberg. He wasn’t trying to start a movement—he simply wanted to call the Church back to the truth of Scripture. But that act sparked the Protestant Reformation, forever changing the course of Christian history.

At its heart, the Reformation reminded believers that:

  • Salvation is by grace alone.

  • Through faith alone.

  • In Christ alone.

  • According to Scripture alone.

  • For the glory of God alone.

Those five “solas” are more than theology—they’re the foundation of how we understand God’s love and live it out every day.

What It Means for Us as Moms

Reformation Day is more than a historical event—it’s an invitation to reform our own hearts and homes.
Just as Luther wanted to return to God’s Word, we too are called to keep Scripture at the center of our families.

Here’s how that can look in our modern, busy world:

  • Teach your kids that grace isn’t earned. Whether they get good grades or forget their chores, God’s love doesn’t change.

  • Model repentance and humility. The Reformation started with one man’s willingness to say, “We’ve gotten off track.” What if our kids saw that same spirit in us?

  • Point everything back to Jesus. Every success, every prayer, every hard day—it’s all for His glory.

When we celebrate Reformation Day, we remind our families that faith isn’t about tradition—it’s about transformation.

Ways to Celebrate Reformation Day as a Family

If you want to shift the focus on October 31st from candy to Christ, here are some simple ideas:

  • Read about Martin Luther’s life or watch a short kids’ video about the Reformation.

  • Sing “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”—the hymn Luther himself wrote.

  • Do a Bible verse scavenger hunt with your kids, finding verses about grace, faith, and God’s Word.

  • Bake “Reformation Rolls” (sweet rolls with hidden “treasures” inside) as a fun reminder that God’s truth is worth discovering.

  • End the night with a family prayer, thanking God for His Word and His grace.

Why It Still Matters

In a culture that constantly shifts its values, Reformation Day calls us back to what never changes—the truth of God’s Word.
As moms, we have the sacred privilege of passing that truth on to the next generation.

So while others celebrate ghosts and goblins, let’s remember the moment that brought light into darkness.
Let’s raise our kids to know that faith is alive, Scripture is powerful, and Jesus alone is enough.

Happy Reformation Day, friends. ✝️
May your home be filled with grace, truth, and the joy of knowing God’s Word endures forever.
