How to Handle “I Don’t Want to Go to Church” Conversations

It usually happens at the worst time.

Sunday morning.
Shoes are missing.
Everyone’s already running late.

And then you hear it:

“I don’t want to go to church.”

Cue the frustration. The pressure. The inner question:

What do we even say to that?

If you’ve been there, you’re not alone. We’ve all had moments like this—and they can feel bigger than they are.

So let’s talk about how to handle it in a way that points our kids to Jesus without turning church into a battle.

Start with Curiosity, Not Correction

Our first instinct is often to respond quickly:

“Too bad—we’re going.”
“We don’t skip church.”

But sometimes what our kids need first… is to be heard.

“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak…” — James 1:19

Instead of shutting it down right away, try asking:

  • “What’s making you not want to go?”
  • “Did something happen last time?”

You might be surprised what’s underneath:

  • They felt shy
  • They didn’t enjoy a class
  • They’re just tired

When we listen first, we open the door for connection.

Remember: This Is About the Heart, Not Just Attendance

Yes, showing up matters. But what matters even more is how our kids feel about church.

We don’t just want them in the building—we want them to know Jesus.

“Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7

If church becomes a constant struggle, it can quietly turn into something they resist long-term.

That doesn’t mean we stop going—it means we approach it with care.

Stay Calm (Even When It’s Inconvenient)

Let’s be honest—this conversation almost never happens when we have extra time or patience.

But our response sets the tone.

When we react with frustration, our kids often match it.
When we stay calm, it helps de-escalate everything.

“A gentle answer turns away wrath…” — Proverbs 15:1

Even a simple:

“I hear you. Let’s talk about it, but we’re still going today.”

…can go a long way.

Explain the “Why” in Simple Ways

Sometimes our kids don’t understand why church matters.

So we help connect the dots:

  • “Church helps us learn about God”
  • “It’s where we grow in our faith”
  • “It’s a place where we worship together”

Keep it age-appropriate and simple.

Not a lecture—just truth, shared with love.

Make Church Feel Like a Safe Place

If your child consistently resists church, it’s worth gently exploring why.

Is there something that could help them feel more comfortable?

  • Sitting with a friend
  • Talking to a teacher
  • Bringing something familiar (for younger kids)

Church should feel like a place where they belong—not just somewhere they’re made to go.

Be Consistent, But Full of Grace

There’s a balance here.

We don’t want to make church optional based on feelings every week—but we also don’t want to ignore what our kids are experiencing.

Consistency teaches commitment.
Grace keeps the relationship strong.

“Let us not give up meeting together…” — Hebrews 10:25

We can hold the boundary and care for their hearts at the same time.

Model What It Looks Like to Want to Go

Our kids notice more than we think.

If church feels like an obligation to us… they’ll feel that too.

But when they see us:

  • Engaged
  • Expectant
  • Willing

…it shapes how they view it.

Not perfectly—but over time, it matters.

When It’s a Tough Morning…

Some Sundays will just be hard.

There may be tears. Resistance. Attitude.

And in those moments, we remind ourselves:

This is a long game.

We’re not just raising kids who attend church—we’re raising kids who know Jesus.

And that takes time, patience, and a lot of grace.

A Gentle Reminder for Today 💛

If your child has said, “I don’t want to go to church”… you’re not failing.

You’re parenting.

These are the moments where connection matters.
Where patience matters.
Where pointing them to Jesus matters most.

God sees your effort.
He’s working in your child’s heart—even when you can’t see it yet.

We’re right there with you.

Having the conversations.
Taking it one Sunday at a time.
And trusting God with the bigger picture. 💛
